Electricity
To find out how many kWh you have used have a look on the back of your power bills for the past year.
A Kilowatt hour (kWh) is the amount of electricity which provides 1000 Watts for an hour. e.g. If an office runs 4 computers rated at 250 Watts each for 1 hour, that uses a kWh of electricity. In Alice Springs, a kWh costs 14cents.
Electricity in Alice Springs is produced by burning natural gas, not coal, so it produces less CO2 that other states. In Alice, every kWh generates 0.64 kg of CO2.
If you only have 1 bill, please do not leave the other bill boxes blank- have a guess based on the bill you do have!

Enter the amount of LPG you use per year, excluding transport
Large domestic bottles of Liquid petroleum Gas (LPG) are 90kg. Camping bottles are 45 or 30kg. LPG has emissions of 3.3kg of CO2 per kg
Gas kg per year

Air travel
How many km in total did your household members fly this year? Don't forget to double the distance for return trips and add multiply by the number of people.
e.g. A family of 3 people flies to a destination 100km away. The total km flown = 100km there + 100km back by 3 people = 600km.
Average flight emissions are 0.2 kg of CO2 per Km per person. Here's an indication of how far you might travel.

Offsets
Any carbon offsets purchased such as Green Power.
Some people may have purchased carbon offsets or carbon credits. There is currently no green energy provider in the NT. If you purchase green energy credits the electricity from renewable sources will be generated in another state. This should reduce the amount of carbon emitted on a national level rather than a local level. Carbon offsets can be purchased for almost any activity which emits carbon e.g. flying, driving, sending waste to landfill. The effectiveness of the carbon offsets commercially available remains controversial, as does the ethics of buying the privilege to emit rather than actually reducing emissions.
