Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob is an information hub assisting Central Australians to live more sustainable lifestyles. It consists of a network of over 500 households in Alice Springs committed to saving on energy and water bills and reducing our environmental impact by using less electricity, water, and petrol. Through simple changes in their daily habits and purchasing decisions these household are leading the way in cool solutions for desert living.

The DKA COOLmob is a joint initiative of Desert Knowledge Australia and the Arid Lands Environment Centre The project originally started as part of the Australian Greenhouse Office national Cool Communities program in 2002 and has been assisting Alice Springs residents ever since.

DKA COOLmob is currently supported by the Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts with individual projects supported by grants and a range of businesses and organisations.


   

Greenhouse Friendly Action in Central Australia
This 32 page booklet has been put together to show you some simple and effective ways to lower your energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This has the added benefit of reducing your power bills. So it is good for the environment AND your wallet.

In this booklet you will find energy-saving information on all aspects of your house and lifestyle, including ideas from Desert Knowledge Australia (DKA) COOLmob members on actions that have worked for them.

Sustainable House Day

Now in it's 7th year, the ANZSES (Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society) Sustainable House Day

shows the benefits of energy efficiency in the home. Showcased houses receive a year’s free membership to ANZSES and $130 cleaning fee.To nominate your house, please download this Expression of Interest form and return it by July 21st.

Sustainable house day is Saturday September 13th.

Solar Oven Bakeoff Workshop Saturday August 23rd

Learn to make and cook in your own solar oven (see prototype right). Steve Sawyer, winner of last year’s solar oven bakeoff, is conducting a workshop at Red Hot Arts on making a box cooker. Materials provided. Places are limited to a maximum of ten.

DesertSMART Gardens Challenge

There’s $3000 worth of garden stuff up for grabs for three Alice gardens which are not DesertSmart, but have potential. By being part of the Gardens Challenge, you'll have the opportunity to access $1000 to make your garden an example of best practice, DesertSmart irrigation. We're looking for a variety of gardens, for example Family Friendly, Food, or Wildlife gardens. Want to find out more??? Email DKA COOLmob for an application form or download the flier.

Solar Oven Bakeoff 08

Steve Sawyer, winner of the 2007 Solar Oven Bakeoff, is preparing to hand over the Green Spoon trophy to the next solar chef. Get your ovens ready and start creating recipes for the Bakeoff 08 on September 20th at Olive Pink Botanic Gardens.
